Covid-19 Freelance Artist Resource
Resources & Information for Freelance, Unaffiliated Artists in the U.S.
Our understanding is that many self-employed workers (including artists!) are eligible for state unemployment insurance (around 40-45% of average wages), federally-based Pandemic Unemployment Compensation ($600/week), and extended benefits, so find your state’s Department of Labor/UI website and collect information, including contracts, tax documents, and pay stubs or proof of payment before you begin the application process.
Some workers, depending on specific circumstances, could also be eligible for Paid Family Leave, or Short Term or Long Term Disability benefits. The Federal Government also has agreed, as part of the CARES Act, to release one time payments of up to $1200 to US citizens in the coming weeks.
Note that, per the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, a single member LLC may also apply for the SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). If you want to learn more about the PPP, check out Fiscal Management Associates’ PPP Toolkit. Funds are depleted as of April 16, but additional funds may become available soon. Check with your bank, or an approved SBA lender for more information.
This guide is extremely helpful to determine what government benefits you might be qualified for: Family Values at Work Explore Your Rights. See here for more details and read this article on options for government relief. Fiscal Management Associates has this PPP Toolkit.
